Where the Parades Are: Our Main Streets represents a unique type of book emanating from the School of Printing Management and Sciences. It is a completely original book about hometown Main Streets and Rochester area Main Streets selected by graduate students in my Contemporary Publishing course. Each student was entirely responsible for selecting his or her own subject and creating a photographic and textual essay. The result is this beautiful book which captures the special qualities of America’s Main Streets from Eighteenth Century elegance, wonderfully preserved, to late-Twentieth Century decay, with manifest contempt for its historical past.
My thanks goes to all my students—some Printing majors, some Graphic Design majors—for their outstanding creative efforts and diligent production. Thanks are due also to Barbara Giordano, Kristine Greenizen, Daniel Gramlich, David Avery, and Michael Riordan, without whose professional skills this book would not have been printed.
There may be some interest in knowing about the publishing imprint “J.H.H. Laundry Press.” The name came to me in a conversation with Amelia Hugill-Fontanel, the book’s Editor-in-Chief, as I was reflecting upon my birthplace in Baltimore, Maryland. I was born in the shadow of a great hospital, not in it. My birthplace, 419 N. Ann Street—in fact, the entire city block—was demolished to make room for a new laundry for Johns Hopkins Hospital.
